my venture accross parking lots and construction sites to find a beauty salon

When the stylist (who told me I should be a model, bless her) heard I was going to a temple wedding, she made sure she waxed and plucked my eyebrows meticulously so I would look my best.

The culture shock? It cost five bucks.

The Walmart portion of our girl's night out

The bachelorette party was great. Camilla's future sister-in-law put up some really awesome decorations and we ate chocolate fondue and played games. We put on masks and Camilla wore a veil and plastic tiara, with a tiger striped bra over her cardigan. We went to Walmart, having a contest to see who could pick out the most bizzare bedroom props. Then Camilla opened boxes of lacey corsets to many dirty jokes from the guests (myself included).

It definitely exceeded my expectations. I pictured a bridal shower type shindig, but what actually transpired was exactly what one expects a bachelorette party to be. Granted, there weren't any sex toys or alcoholic drinks, but we didn't need them--we had a blast.

The reality that my best friend is going to be somebody's wife has hit. In many ways I feel that we are still the same silly, whimsical teenagers we were when we met. But we're not. We're women. Silly, whimsical women.

For example, this morning she and I joked that I was going to steal her from Chad and we'd go on the run, re-enacting Telephone a la Gaga and Beyonce. We went on a tangent with it and made up tangled soap opera plotlines about our star-crossed elopement. It was fun and it's the same sort of way we've always talked, never taking our lives too seriously.

But tomorrow morning, we aren't going to make a jailbreak clad in fishnet stockings, hair set in rollers. She is going to put on a white dress and take a vow, and everything is going to change.

Will we still be able to joke around about our undying love for one another? Will we still spend hours spinning our imaginations together into webs of ingenuity? Will we still watch romantic comedies and eat mint chocolate chip ice cream and laugh at the cheesy actors?

Only time will tell. But despite the fact that her life is changing, I know our friendship will hold strong. We lead vastly different lives. Rather than estranging us, it's created a symbiotic curiousity about the "other side." And while culture shock can throw you for a loop, new experiences and concepts evolve a person.

Tomorrow I will get to experience being in the wedding party of a couple married in the temple. I'm a little bit nervous that I'll feel like a fish out of water. But mostly, I'm excited. Though culturally differences impede many relationships, friendship has brought me here. And that is all I need to know that I belong.

Now that I think on it,

I might not publish the entries I wrote on the bus ride. The first was about how I found Aldous Huxley's picture on the back cover of Brave New World oddly attractive. The second was a long narrative about my friendship with Camilla. While these were fun to write, they were caffeine-fueled tangents that had little to do with my trip.

Well, my friendship with Camilla has everything to do with it, and I'll write all about her in the next post. But the article felt too personal. I want to selfishly keep my reflections to myself. This blog is not meant to be a diary.

Tomorrow I will post about the shuttle ride and the many events of tonight. But for now, I'm way too tired. These Mormon girls throw one hell of a bachelorette party.

XOXO

Technical Difficulties

I decided to write some articles on my laptop because my phone was dying and I didn't want to be stranded in St George without a way to contact Camilla. I figured I would just post them when I got here. I'm here now, but lacking an important factor: the internet. I've already written two word-doc entries and I'm pretty obsessive-compulsive about keeping this blog chronological. So I'm going to continue to write the entries on my laptop and post them when I get the chance. This will kind of eradicate the live-blog feel, but I am writing them live-blog style, so keep that in mind when reading them. I'm wondering if I should post them all at once or release them one by one, increasing interest as I go. I'm curious to what you readers would prefer. After all, pandering to the interests of the consumer is what business is all about!

As a brief aside, I'm in St George and I'm having a wonderful time! You'll hear about it eventually. 'Til then, au revoir!

(Afterthought: I might just take the articles I've written and key them into my cell phone. It's a lot of work, but if people are interested I might be tempted to do it!)

St George shuttle, Las Vegas, NV

All aboard! Decided to leave a little earlier because, let's face it, my budget for this weekend does not cover Law Vegas consumerism. I was able to pick up a couple of things from the candy store for the bachelorette party.

As you may have deducted from the location, Camilla is Mormon, and it's a Mormon wedding. Pretty straightforward. Mormon bachelorette parties though? Much more open to interpretation. Just as Futurama's humor was subtler and consequently somewhat better when it was on Fox instead of Comedy Central, boundaries allow one to be a little more tongue-in-cheek (innuendo unintended). In case she reads this, I don't want to give anything away, but I'm hoping I toed the line well.

The shuttle is NICE. A friendly driver named Duane, three other passengers, self controlled ac and even complementary mini water bottles. The other passengers are friendly but not talkative. Who would have thought I'd be the most sparkly and doe-eyed individual on a bus to... Utah? I'm owning it though. Used my effervescent outgoing nature to demand control of the air conditioning. Time to kick back and read Aldous Huxley and take in the, uh, sights.

One thing I do wish I'd thought of in this whirlwind of spontanuity: Dramamine. We've barely left the airport and I'm already suffering the first symptoms of motion sickness.

Hey, it can't all be smooth sailing!

McCarran Airport, Las Vegas, NV

Just typed a long entry that failed to post, here's my re-creation attempt -_-

Embarking on my journey to the wedding of the amazingly wonderful Camilla, the Lennon to my McCartney. Got dropped of by my awesome roomate Lizzy's boyfriend Paul; the journey has just begun!

After searching far and wide I checked myself in to the lost and found. The shuttle system is very quaint and informal--if you don't have a reservation you just pay and hop on. The next shuttle available was about to leave, and I want to shop, so I'm going to have to rely on my ever-present good luck to get one of the six seats for 12 pm.

I've quit smoking but had to bum a Camel off this really cute Swiss boy sitting next to me, if only as an excuse to strike up a conversation. Worked like a charm. For those who want to judge, this is a blog about travel, and what sort of worldly woman would I be if I didn't observe the culture that wanders into my territory? No worldly woman at all, I say.

So, I'm going to go see if I can buy my shuttle ticket now. Cross your fingers for me!

After all, isn't uncertainty all part of the adventure?

(Disclaimer: This is a live blog, meaning done quickly, currently, and without editing, so if you spot any grammatical errors or signs of latent insanity, cut a girl some slack. That's all part of the fun!)

sitting on a bench with luggage and red bull to keep me company

Decided to dress conservatively since I'm going to a conservative state. People at unlv didn't recognize me as I left. Very telling about my normal attire. I don't know whether to be ashamed, or proud of my self for generally dressing like a bamf.
